Community Based Consultation

Community-Based Consultation is an Early Childhood Mental Health service that provides consultation, education and training to families, caregivers and professionals working with children with challenges. PEP consultants provide on-site and in-home consultation for families of children ages birth to six in Cuyahoga County who are at-risk for social, emotional or behavioral difficulties. These children may be exhibiting behaviors that prevent them from remaining in their current living, preschool or childcare setting.

How the Service Works
PEP consultants provide consultation, education and training for caregivers, families, child welfare workers and other professionals. As needed, they provide parent training, family support, general knowledge of and linkage to community resources, crisis intervention and intervention strategies for at home and in the community.

Consultants work collaboratively with all members of the team to achieve the best possible outcomes for the child. They advocate for the vital interests of the child and family by maintaining a working knowledge of community resources. Consultants strive to bring together systems of support to help the child and family succeed. Consultants also work to educate professionals on identifying signs that a child may be at-risk and on recognizing the need for care when a child is affected by trauma.

Consultation on average consists of 1 – 5 visits, depending on the situation. If at any point the child appears not to be making progress and/or the parent expresses a desire for more intensive intervention, the consultant will link the family to community mental health treatment services and will assist with care coordination.

This service is funded by Invest in Children through the Alcohol Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board and is conducted in partnership with the Department of Children and Families Services (DCFS), all agencies of Cuyahoga County.
