Remembering Lee Maxwell, One of PEP’s Founders

It is with sadness that Positive Education Program shares the news of the passing of Dr. Lee Maxwell on Feb. 4, 2025. Dr. Maxwell helped to found our organization, alongside Dr. Rico Pallotta in 1971. He was PEP’s clinical director for over 35 years, providing key leadership as well as clinical expertise and direction in support of the schools and young people PEP sought to support.
PEP CEO Habeebah Rasheed Grimes, who worked with Maxwell for many years, shared the following in a written statement.
Dr. Maxwell’s leadership impacted many PEP leaders, including myself, during our professional journeys. He was passionate about PEP’s mission and encouraged us to believe in our kids and in ourselves as we sought to deliver on the promise of that mission. He understood the magnitude of PEP’s role and responsibility in the lives of young people who needed to feel safe and accepted in a world where they experienced more rejection and hurt than a child ever should. His fiery demeanor, quick wit, and clinical acumen were an embodiment of his passion, and something I will always remember and appreciate.
Mary Bonamer, Ph.D., PEP’s director, clinical evaluation and programming also worked with Maxwell, reporting to him early in her clinical career. “Dr. Maxwell was a highly skilled psychologist and keen clinician,” Bonamer said. “He had expertise in child development and a comprehensive understanding of resources for children and their families. He was always a great support, and his supervision helped me navigate many challenging situations.”
Maxwell loved to travel and went on many international and domestic trips with his partner Mike Prunty. He was interested in local venues and Broadway shows and was active with the Cleveland International Piano Competition. He often commented on the wealth of talent at each competition. Maxwell enjoyed entertaining, whether a small dinner party or a large New Years Eve party. He never wanted a week to go by without getting together with friends.
A celebration of Dr. Maxwell’s life will take place on Saturday, March 8 at DeJohn Funeral Homes and Crematory. Check the funeral home webpage for the exact time.
